Another summer of drought ahead- snow pack 1/3 of average. The solution? more pumping of groundwater!
The problems . . . aquifers created over 200 historically wet years are rapidly being depleted
. . . subsidence, land collapse and compression, from over-drafting
. . . ground water being ‘harvested’ and sold to entities outside the County
. . . water ownership and priorities disputed
SGMA requires each groundwater sub-basin to collaboratively create a Plan for sustainability looking forward.
Merced’s three sub-basins have done so. A recently formed stakeholders committee is monitoring the implementation
stage of the Plan. Many practical and impactful decisions remain to be made.
